Should You Be Drinking Gatorade?
Gatorade was first made for the University of Florida football team because a doctor/friend, while watching a game, noticed that the players never went to the bathroom during a game. Because they were sweating so heavily, they were losing up to 12 lbs. of body fluid per game, foregoing the need to go to the bathroom! The doctor worked on a formula to replenish the players’ fluid and nutrients so they could play strongly through the whole game. His formula is what we today call Gatorade and was truly meant for endurance athletes.
Do any of us exercise or play hard enough to need a bottle of Gatorade? After all that hard work, don’t undo all the good you did by being active and burning calories for 45 minutes. An individual bottle of Gatorade (2 servings) has as much sugar as a can of coke! Approximately 10 teaspoons of sugar!! It’s called a ‘sports drink’, which is a bit misleading.

Propel is also made by Gatorade. Propel came about because people started realizing that their exercise was not intense enough to justify drinking Gatorade. They also started reading labels more and realized that the sugar content was way too high. The makers of Gatorade knew that many people would not drink plain water so they made a flavored water with less sugar. Always read the ingredient list to see what flavored water is sweetened with –this is a personal judgment call you have to make.
Another thing to be aware of is they’ll put something new on the market, get you used to buying it, then change the formula. In the beginning, Propel didn’t have HFCS in it then all of a sudden it did. It’s now sweetened with an artificial sweetener.
Water is by far the superior drink: No sugar, No Artificial Sweetener, Quenches your Thirst!
